iMazing Alternative for Court: Exporting iPhone Texts and Calls Without a Subscription

iMazing went subscription-only in 2025. If you just need a custody-case thread on paper, that can be more product than you want to pay for. Here's the best iMazing alternative for each job, who should stay, and what else exists — every price checked October 1, 2026.

The Short Answer: Who Should Stay on iMazing, and Who Should Leave

If you want iMazing for what it is — a full iPhone manager — stay. It is good at that, and no court-only tool replaces it. If you came for one job, a printed text thread or call log for a custody case, and the subscription put you off, the right iMazing alternative depends on whether you need texts only or calls too. For texts only, Decipher TextMessage ($29.99 one-time) and CopyTrans Contacts ($19.99, Windows only) are one-time purchases. For texts and calls on one timeline, Exhibit A is free to try with a watermark, and a clean copy is $39 one-time for 90 days. TouchCopysells a lifetime license and non-renewing 6- and 12-month ones. All prices are from the vendors' own sites as of October 1, 2026.

The reason the question exists: iMazing sells subscriptions only now, and we couldn't load a price on its pages today, so check their store for the current rate. The three-tool table is in our Decipher vs. iMazing vs. TouchCopy comparison; this post is about leaving a subscription, and what you give up when you do.

What Changed: iMazing Is Subscription-Only Now

Until mid-2025, iMazing sold a Personal device license (the Business one ended in January 2025): pay once, use it on that device. Its licensing policy says it discontinued that license in June 2025 and now sells two kinds of subscription — Personal, which covers up to 20 devices per year, and Business. Its own blog says too many buyers misunderstood the old license's limitations or felt misled, and that the subscription comes without hidden conditions. If you bought a device license earlier, its legacy licensing policy explains what that still covers.

A subscription pays for the whole product: backups, transfers, app data, several devices, ongoing updates. For someone who needs one thread printed before a hearing, that is a lot of product for one job.

What iMazing Does Better Than a Court-Only Tool

  • It is a full device manager, not just an exporter: backups, file and photo transfer, app data.
  • It reads a connected iPhone or a backup iMazing already holds, so you can browse without the phone in hand.
  • Broader message coverage than Exhibit A. Its message guide lists SMS, RCS and iMessage, and its site lists WhatsApp. Exhibit A does not cover WhatsApp.
  • More formats and attachments: PDF, Excel, CSV and text, with attachments exportable, plus RSMF, an e-discovery format its legal guide says needs a Business subscription.
  • Export metadata. Its legal guide says exports can show the iPhone's name and serial number, the export date, and the Messages database's last-modified date.
  • A "Show time for all messages" option, which its guide recommends turning on when you produce a PDF for a court case.

If those matter to you, an alternative is not an upgrade.

The Court-Export Job, in Plain Terms

A printout for a family-court case has a narrow job. Whatever tool you use, open the PDF and check for these:

  • A date and time on every message, not one stamp per day.
  • Who sent each message, with contact names rather than bare numbers.
  • The whole conversation, in order, not curated excerpts.
  • Attachments, if the photos matter to your case.
  • A layout someone can read on paper, with page numbers and a header.

Every tool here can produce some version of that; the differences are price, setup, and whether calls land on the same page as texts. Rules vary by state and judge, and no export is admissible on its own — our guide to court-ready phone exhibits covers what an exhibit needs beyond the messages.

Alternatives, by What You Want

  • A one-time purchase, texts only: Decipher TextMessage is $29.99 one-time with two device activations, on Windows and Mac. It saves PDF, CSV, HTML or TXT, includes image and video attachments, and its site says it handles encrypted backups. CopyTrans Contacts is $19.99, Windows only, reads a connected iPhone, and exports messages as PDF, Word, Excel, CSV, HTML or text, including WhatsApp.
  • Closest to the old model: TouchCopy sells a lifetime license (two computers) and 12- and 6-month licenses (one computer) that its site says do not auto-renew. It reads a phone connected by USB or Wi-Fi, saves chats as PDF, HTML, CSV or text, and copies call history with dates and durations. Its site lists SMS, RCS, WhatsApp, LINE and iMessage conversations, with attached media carried along. On "iMazing vs. TouchCopy": iMazing is deeper, with backup browsing, export metadata and a legal-export guide; TouchCopy is narrower and offers a lifetime option.
  • Free to try: Exhibit A's free tier exports the full exhibit with a watermark, and Decipher's site says its free trial limits how many messages you can save per contact.
  • No install on Windows: Exhibit A runs in a Chrome or Edge tab. Our Windows walkthrough for exporting texts to PDF shows the steps. AltTunes, from Softorino, is a Windows install whose site says it saves messages with timestamps and attachments as PDF and exports the call log as CSV; its pages showed a free download and paid plans but no price, so check current pricing. Those are the vendor's claims; we didn't test them.
  • Calls and texts together: Exhibit A. The Mac app reads the Mac's own call and message records. On Windows, call history comes from an encrypted iPhone backup, because Apple writes it only there, and the browser app asks for the backup password and decrypts it on your own computer.

What It Costs: 90 Days Versus a Year

A short case (about 90 days):

  • Exhibit A: $0 for the watermarked exhibit, or $39 for a clean 90-day Case Pass.
  • Decipher TextMessage: $29.99, messages only.
  • CopyTrans Contacts: $19.99, Windows only.
  • iMazing, TouchCopy, AltTunes: check current pricing.

An ongoing case (a year or more):

  • Decipher and CopyTrans stay at $29.99 and $19.99, and Decipher's site says there are no recurring fees.
  • Exhibit A's Case Pass covers 90 days. A full year means Pro at $14 a month ($168) or Lifetime at $149, which is more than the one-time tools above.
  • iMazing renews as a subscription; TouchCopy's lifetime license never expires. Check both prices.

The honest read: if you only need texts and the case will run long, a one-time messages-only tool costs less than Exhibit A's paid plans. The extra money buys calls and texts together in a court layout, which matters only if calls are part of your story. If you export once before a hearing, 90 days may be all you need.

Where Exhibit A Fits, and Where It Doesn't

Exhibit A turns the call history and iMessages in an iPhone backup into a court-formatted PDF: a color-coded calendar, then a per-day log with every call and message, each with its own date and time. Calls are labeled Connected, Missed or Denied; "Denied" is inferred from an unanswered outgoing call, because iOS does not record whether someone actively declined. The Mac app (macOS 12+, free at /download) reads the Mac's own call and message records. On Windows or any computer, the browser app at getexhibita.com/app reads an iPhone backup folder in Chrome or Edge, parses it in the tab, uploads nothing, and needs no account.

The limits: Apple documents call history as living only in an encryptedbackup (iOS 13 and later), so for the calls, tick "Encrypt local backup" and set a password. The browser app asks for it and decrypts inside the tab. An unencrypted backup gives a messages-only exhibit, and the app says so plainly. A lost backup password cannot be recovered by anyone, Apple included. Exhibit A exports one contact at a time, covers iMessage, SMS and calls but not WhatsApp, and isn't a device manager. Paid plans carry a 30-day money-back guarantee.

One rule overrides everything above: verify with your attorney. None of this is legal advice — Exhibit A isn't a law firm — and no export from any tool is admissible on its own. Evidence rules vary by state and by judge, so show your attorney the format before you rely on it.

FAQ

Is iMazing a one-time purchase or a subscription now?

A subscription. iMazing's licensing policy says it discontinued the one-time device license in June 2025 and now sells Personal and Business subscriptions only. We couldn't load a price on its pages on October 1, 2026, so check their store for the current rate. If you bought a device license earlier, iMazing's legacy licensing policy explains what it still covers.

What is the best iMazing alternative for Windows?

It depends on the job. For texts only, Decipher TextMessage ($29.99 one-time) and CopyTrans Contacts ($19.99, Windows only) were one-time purchases on their sites as of October 1, 2026. For texts and calls together without installing anything, Exhibit A runs in a Chrome or Edge tab at getexhibita.com/app; the call log comes from an encrypted iPhone backup, and the app asks for the backup password. TouchCopy offers a lifetime license too; check current pricing.

Can iMazing export iPhone texts to PDF for court?

Yes. Its message guide lists PDF, Excel, CSV and text exports on Windows and Mac, and recommends turning on "Show time for all messages" when you are producing a PDF for a court case. Whether a court accepts the result is a separate question: no tool makes a printout admissible, and rules vary by state and judge, so ask your attorney how it will need to be authenticated.

Does iMazing export call history to PDF?

Not according to its own guide, which lists CSV and Excel for call history and says backup encryption is required to access it. To get a call log onto a readable page, you would format the spreadsheet yourself. Exhibit A puts calls and texts in one PDF: its Mac app reads the Mac's own records, and its browser app reads call history from an encrypted backup after you type the backup password.

Is there a free way to export iPhone messages as a PDF?

For a few messages, screenshots with the timestamps revealed cost nothing. For a long thread, Exhibit A's free tier exports the full court-formatted exhibit with a watermark, in a browser tab on Windows or from the Mac app, and Decipher TextMessage's site says its free trial lets you save a few messages per contact. A clean Exhibit A copy is $39 one-time for 90 days; check each vendor's current pricing before you buy.
